That amazingly articulate summarization of the past day or three's events being said, here is my entry for the Okami contest! This was kind of difficult to get into, actually, since I had no real plan at any point in the creation process. I only had a few solid ideas:complete the drawing portion using a red/black color scheme, add a rising sun in the background, and use some real ink and a paintbrush.
I wanted to capture the woodblock feel of the game so I grabbed some cool-lookin' origami paper for the background. (Yes, I did an actual pseudo-background for one of my pieces, dear God, what is the world coming to?) I think it (the background) turned out as close to the original idea as I had hoped so I'm pleased with that. How does everyone like the sun?
The drawing went along without a hitch until I had to remove it from the page with an exacto. There has got to be an easier way to do this then what I did for an hour and a half. But it turned out relatively unscathed, I managed not to saw off any important bits. ^_^
And I used india ink and an honest-to-God calligraphy brush (brought back from Japan) for the all-important circular symbol of the sun. I love that game's idea of creating objects and attacks using a paintbrush so I tried to do the same with this piece.
After all is said and done, I'm really proud of this piece, since I don't usually do collage projects(though that may change b/c this was great fun and a good learning experience!). Everyone, enjoy "Those Who Paint With Wolves", let me know what you think!
this is very good! I love your style, especially because it isn't the mainstream manga-thing that most people do, and I always find it refreshing to see new styles. The picture itself is amazing, though with a few anatomical errors concerning the teeth, but who cares? ^^ I think it works very well with the origami-paper in the background, especially because, personally, I never have any patience with those damn things (backgrounds, that is)... over all, a very good piece of art ^w^
Wow, I am SO sorry it's taken me this long to reply back. JUST got stable Internet access again so...Thank you for commenting! And such nice helpful detailed things you had to say too!
I'm really trying to get away from the sterotypical anime-style drawings I've been so used to. I'm glad someone noticed haha. Now it's like a Disney/anime style thing...so it's still in progress but it's fun to see where it's going too.
Yeah, my wolf teeth are failures, but youre right, it's not the main point of the piece haha. Still, I shoulda been more careful. I dont have any patience with backgrounds either, but I discovered origami paper makes some nice designs that'd be too much work if done by hand. I've implemented it a few times since this piece, it's fun.
